What is the most important team value you have?
Every opinion and input are important to create amazing things. This is why our most important value is also the ability for everyone to contribute ideas. It is impossible for one person to know it all and everything is always a team effort.
How many people work remotely in your company and how often?
There are over 50 people in our team today and we are entirely distributed. Our founders are working together at Silicon Valley. Rest of our team is literally scattered throughout the world – we have people working from the US, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Eastern Europe, India, China, and Japan.
Everyone on the team can start working whenever they are up and ready to work. We all have our own routines and habits. Some people love to wake up early, some prefer to stay up late. Being open and flexible makes sure that everyone on the team is motivated when they enter the virtual office and start working.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced as remote team?
Communication is hard for every company, but more so when you are completely distributed. We have people working from different countries and we are a very diverse team – everyone has different experiences, cultural habits and so on. Making sure that we understand each other is extremely important.
How do you communicate within your team? Any tips and tricks you would share with others?
Slack is a must-have for any remote team. We have created open groups for different projects so everyone can see what is going on in a particular project. And obviously other channels for general conversations, the virtual watercooler and so on.
Humor is important – it can help a lot when building your team community in a virtual office.
We also have regular Google Hangouts meetings so we can see eachother once and a while 🙂
Do you use visuals when collaborating with your remote team?
Oh yes. A lot, to be honest. Visuals are a big part of our work as quite often our job could be a design task, building beautiful slides for our customers, doing some simple illustration or pretty much anything a company might need.
We send documents, slideshows, and different graphics through Slack. Google documents and Google spreadsheets are also very helpful for assigning tasks and keeping track of progress. I also highly recommend Trello for a remote team’s company to-do list.
What’s the funniest moment you’ve had as remote team?
We abuse gifs a lot on Slack. A good gif is worth a million words, don’t you agree? 🙂 Some of the gifs probably make me laugh more than anyone else, but that’s okay too 🙂
We are a very open team and there is always some friendly mocking and jokes happening around. For example, when a founder is wearing a shirt that beautifully matches his eye color during all hands meeting via Google Hangouts, you will naturally bring it up, right? 🙂
